The front of our Princess Theatre looks very different today than it did when it was built in 1911. You can see the original design and also a photo of how it looked in the 1920s here. In 1939 the building was renovated to give it a contemporary Art Deco look - what a change! The Art Deco facade still exists today.
In 1970 there was a gala event to mark the re-opening of the Princess Theatre as a live performance venue. You can see the guests arriving in their tuxedos and furs to see The Australian Ballet perform. A band played in the street, the Governor General was in attendance and the opening was broadcast live on 7LA!
Before 1970 the building was used as a cinema and many locals have fond memories of going to the movies at the Princess Theatre. Some of our wonderful projectionists reunited in recent years when for a nostalgic film screening. Check out the size of the film reel! Now imagine getting that huge projector up all the stairs and into the old projection box up above the dress circle.
