Erasing Hate Since 1998
'The Laramie Project' is a play based on a tragic true event and was created by Moisés Kaufman and the New York based Tectonic Theater Project, in response to the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard a young gay man, in Laramie, Wyoming.
The Laramie Project is known worldwide as an 'iconic' theatre piece based on the tragic 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man in Laramie, Wyoming.
Creator Moisés Kaufman and company members of his New York based Tectonic Theater Project, visited Laramie on six occasions over the following two years in an attempt to understand what happened to Matthew, and why.
During that time, they completed face-to-face interviews with residents of the town, members of the police force and Matthew’s friends. From over 200 personal transcripts, the playwrights constructed an extraordinary, word-for-word chronicle of life in the town after the murder.
70 different characters are played by a cast of 9 talented actors in a show that guarantees to have a profound impact on audience members.
Following the matinee performance on Saturday, 24th August, there will be a short Q&A hosted by Garry Wakefield, creator of the Queer Tasmania podcast. Panellists will include our cast member Jaz Daniells, and vocal coach, Travis Hennessy. All are welcome.
“A pioneering work of theatrical reportage and a powerful stage event.”
“Astonishing. Not since Angels in America has a play attempted so much: nothing less than an examination of the American psyche at the end of the millennium.”
“Nothing short of stunning… you will be held in rapt attention.”
