BAKERSFIELD MIST

12 Sep 2017

Tasmanian Theatre Company

Written by Stephen Sachs

Is the true value of art in the eyes of the beholder?

Maude (Julie Nhill), an unemployed bartender, has bought a painting for a few bucks from an op shop. Despite almost trashing it, she now thinks it’s a Jackson Pollock worth millions. In fact she’s certain it is.

But when world-class art expert, Lionel Percy (John Wood), flies over from New York and arrives at her trailer park home in Bakersfield to authenticate the painting, he really has no idea what he’s about to discover.

Based on a true story, Bakersfield Mist is a comedy set in the present day.

“Inspired by true events, this sparkling and colourful new comedy-drama asks vital questions about what makes art and people truly authentic” The Telegraph

“A thoroughly entertaining 85 minutes of quipping arguing, boozing, opining, fist-fighting and soul-baring” The Times

“An intellectual show full of shadings” Daily Mail

“... great fun, and there’s a natural odd-couple rapport between the two that powers ‘Bakersfield Mist’ ... on the more earnest side, Sach’s does manage to make quite a decent point about the subjectivity of value judgement, in both art and class” Time Out

To coincide with the play, Theatre North at the Princess and Hotel Grand Chancellor Launceston are holding a Jackson Pollock-Inspired Art Competition & Exhibition, Pollock at the Princess. Click HERE for more details on how to enter.
