THEATRE NORTH AT THE PRINCESS & FRIENDS OF THEATRE NORTH
THE LAST READINGS OF CHARLES DICKENS
Created & Performed by Michael Edgar
Directed by Peter Hammond
In the final years of his life, prematurely aged and chronically ill, Charles Dickens pursued a punishing schedule of one-night stands, giving readings from his books. These were enormously popular, but ruinous to his health.
‘By Heaven, he’ll die before them all,’ his doctor warned his son.
How did the traumas of his childhood, the failure of his marriage and his secret liaison with an actress thirty years younger than himself, feed his compulsion to perform? And why was he determined to add to his repertoire the emotionally and physically draining, murder of Nancy by Bill Sykes?
Michael Edgar’s one-person performance not only illuminates these questions; it dramatically explores the very nature of performance and acting.
