JUST FLARE

Theatre North’s RAW4! Young Talent on Stage busking competition for young emerging artists was again held at Festivale earlier in the month for its fourth year in the partnership.

19-year-old indie/folk singer-songwriter Hannah Lawes was crowned this year’s Winner after impressing the crowd with an original song titled “Blind”. Hannah’s duo (now trio) Just Flare performed in last year’s competition, placing 3rd, but this year Hannah bravely stepped out as a solo artist – and nailed it!

Runners-up included 28-year-old blues/rock singer-songwriter Scott Haigh and 22-year-old opera singer John Morgan, both of Launceston, and singer-songwriters 18-year-old rock’n’roll crooner Mason Waller and 22-year-old indie/folk artist Amy Pegg, both of the North West Coast. Scott, Mason and Amy have all entered the competition in previous years, proving this year that they have all been working hard to grow as performers.

Hannah will star in her very own Winner’s Concert at the Earl Arts Centre on Saturday 2 March, 7.30pm, as part of the Theatre North 2019 Subscription Season. Hannah will perform both as a solo artist and with her band Just Flare. Scott, John and Amy will also perform their own sets, as well as last year’s RAW3! Winner Fiontan Cassidy, and with the concert ending in a spectacular finale.

The RAW4! Young Talent on Stage busking competition is designed to give young people an opportunity to perform in public and gain confidence. The competition was open to performers of any kind aged 16-35 and auditions were held to select finalists to perform at the prime Saturday time slot at Festivale, where the Judges Dan Taylor (Chilli FM), Belinda King (ABC Radio/Encore Theatre Company) and Sarah Triffitt (Valley Sounds/When She Believes) had the difficult task of choosing a winner. They expressed that this was the tightest competition yet, due to the incredible amount of talent presented on the day.

We are proud to be able to support the growth of young performers.
