Damian Callinan
There is barely a bakery in regional Australia that hasn’t had one of Damian Callinan’s show posters blu-tacked to its window. In Hall Stories, the celebrated actor, comedian and creator of the hit film The Merger, combines his skills as a storyteller, stand-up and character actor, to pull back the curtain on his own tour stories and examine the quirks, traditions and characters of Australian halls and meeting places.
In this particular show, Damian will also be spending time with the local community to delve into the history and characters of the Albert Hall, and the role that it plays in the broader community.
Hall Stories is Callinan doing what he does best, where he does it best. He knows how to talk over a bubbling urn; wind up when the CWA heads to the supper room, and stack the chairs in 5’s at the end of the night.
You just let him know where to get the hall key, and he’ll do the rest.
'...that perfect performance combo of hilarity and community'
Every hall has a story to tell, and we’ve heard that this one’s got a few cracking chapters.
We’re hosting a series of relaxed drop-in sessions where you’re invited to pop by, have a chat, have a cuppa, spill the tea, and share your memories of the hall. No speeches. No pressure. No microphone unless you grab one yourself.
Got a story about a dance that went off the rails? A meeting that changed everything? A character who always sat in the same seat? We want it.
Photos? Yes please. Old programs, newspaper clippings, trophies, costumes, mysterious hall paraphernalia found in the back of a cupboard? Absolutely. Bring the lot.
Stay five minutes or a little longer. Linger. Reminisce. Correct someone else’s version of events.
Can’t make it in person? Send your stories by email or good old-fashioned letter. We’ll happily read every word.
Because here’s the thing — every hall has a story to tell, and Damian Callinan is very happy to eavesdrop.
So drop in.
Have a chat.
Have a cuppa.
Spill the tea.
We’re all ears.
