SCHUMANN Symphony No 2
Doyenne of Australian cellists, Sue-Ellen Paulsen appears as soloist in golden-hued works by Respighi and Tchaikovsky in these, her farewell solo performances with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Fittingly, her swansong with the TSO includes one of the most ravishing of all cello pieces, Saint-Saëns’ ‘The Swan’.
Music by Schumann frames the concert. The Manfred Overture roils with Romantic fervour while the Second Symphony, which is in the bright key of C major, blazes with hearty, life-affirming glory. Celebratory finales hardly come more joyous than this! On the podium is Marko Letonja, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Conductor Laureate.
