By William Shakespeare.
Adapted and directed by Kelly Wilson
Original music by Alex Loveless and Scott Howland
One of William Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, this adaptation of Much Ado About Not(h)ing, which originated at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 2017, explores what we take note of as a 21st century society. From dance choreography and movement to the original music featuring lyrics taken from Shakespeare’s text, there is plenty to catch the eye and ear in this production. The audience is invited to turn ON their mobile phones during the show. They can choose between viewing the performances of the actors onstage or within the digital world, accessed through Facebook on their mobile phones or a projection of the live Facebook newsfeed on a screen at the back of the stage. For those wanting to engage in a little mischief with the villains of the play, Joan and Borachio, there is a Messenger chat group the audience can follow, actively immersing them in the performance.
It’s 2021, in fair Tasmania, where we lay our scene. Pedro Don and his platoon have returned from their deployment in Afghanistan, ahead of Australia’s final withdrawal. Ancient grudge has broken to new mutiny between Pedro and his half-sister Joan upon the recent death of their father. Meanwhile, Pedro’s godfather, former Premier of Tasmania, Leonato Elliott, tries to encourage a reconciliation by inviting his godson and Joan, along with Pedro’s band of brothers from his platoon, Claudio and Benedick, to a welcome home celebration with his daughter Hero, niece Beatrice and sister Ursula.
