A special event celebrating Tasmania's first family of entertainment

In the days before Netflix, we would be dazzled and delighted by the travelling performer. Families and friends would roll up to their local halls to witness extraordinary variety shows filled with opera arias, folk dances, and fabulous films of far-away lands. Now, we invite you to experience the showbiz razzamatazz of The Marvellous Corricks in our glamourous Festival gala.

Albert and Sarah Corrick had seven daughters and one son – all multi-skilled entertainers who came to Tasmania from New Zealand at the turn of the 20th Century. For the next 15 years, these talented travelling performers put on thousands of shows, achieving worldwide fame and considerable fortune through their song and dance. On retirement in 1915, the family settled in Launceston, devoting themselves to community music-making and charitable works and earning the love and esteem of their city.

Paying tribute to The Marvellous Corricks, Ten Days on the Island joins forces with the National Film and Sound Archive and Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery for a show-stopping event in the Princess Theatre – a regular performance venue for the original entertainers.

Soprano Emily Burke and narrator Stuart Loone will bring to life the stories, songs, and surprises that made the Corricks famous; and Dean Stevenson will lead some of Tasmania’s finest musicians alongside a screening of the magnificent collection of films known as Leonard’s Beautiful Pictures. Roll up for this unique Festival experience from a bygone era.
