Elgar Cello Concerto

BEETHOVEN King Stephen, Overture
ELGAR Cello Concerto in E minor, Op 85
SCHUBERT Symphony No 3 in D, D200

Passionate, expressive and elegiac, Elgar’s Cello Concerto, which was written in the aftermath of World War I, has moved and touched audiences for over a century. Generations of front-rank cellists have stepped up to the challenge of bringing Elgar’s music to life. In this concert, hear the remarkably talented Jonathan Békés, TSO Principal Cello, rise to that challenge. Also on the program, Schubert’s youthful Symphony No 3 and Beethoven’s Overture to August von Kotzebue’s stage play King Stephen, which Beethoven composed around the same time as his Seventh Symphony.

Conducting this varied program is Marko Letonja, former Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and currently the orchestra’s Conductor Laureate.
